Según la reciente biografía de Darwin Porter, titulada 'Brando Unzipped' (algo así como Brando 'con la cremallera abierta'), el actor era un incansable e insaciable conquistador de mujeres... y de hombres. Según Porter, por su cama pasaron compañeros de profesión como Burt Lancaster, Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Tyrone Power, James Dean o Montgomery Clift.
Pero la polémica biografía de Porter va más allá. Según ésta, las relaciones gay de Marlon Brando no fueron simples y puntuales divertimentos sexuales. Porter afirma que su verdadero amor fue un hombre, el actor cómico Wally Cox. Casi al estilo 'Brokeback Mountain', Marlon mantuvo a lo largo de toda su vida un romance con este actor; desde la infancia, donde se conocieron, hasta la muerte de éste en 1973.
En julio de 2004, cuando el actor murió a los 80 años de edad, la prensa publicó que sus cenizas fueron esparcidas en Tahití y en el Valle de la Muerte (California) junto a las de otro actor y amigo suyo. Éste no era otro que Wally Cox. Según Porter, Marlon conservó sus cenizas en una urna durante más de treinta años y dispuso que, a su muerte, se mezclaran con las suyas. Brando, que afirmó en cierta ocasión que ninguna mujer le había hecho feliz, confesó una vez que si Wally Cox hubiese sido del otro sexo, la relación habría terminado en matrimonio.
Sus conquistas masculinas fueron casi tan numerosas como las femeninas, entre ellos actores homosexuales como Montgomery Clift (Porter cuenta como una vez los dos se desnudaron en pleno Wall Street por una apuesta), Rock Hudson o John Gielgud (con quién coincidió en 'Julio Cesar' y 'La fórmula'). También se le atribuyen relaciones con el comediógrafo Noel Coward o el músico Leonard Bernstein, compositor de 'West Side Story'.
